Søndermarks Church is placed in the southern part of Viborg and is a modern round church built in 1980/81.
The round shape of Søndermarkskirken was not intentional, but rather a consequence of a number of considerations that had to be taken into account. The shape promotes the idea of community, and the church is designed so that all church services take place in the centre of the room.
In Søndermarkskirken, you can also see the beautiful ‘Hærvejstæppet’, a 10-metre-long embroidered tapestry with motifs from the Hærvejen. The tapestry was embroidered by a group of local women and depicts beautiful motifs from the Hærvejen. Definitely worth a visit!
The baptismal font is a real mussel shell. Since ancient times, the mussel has symbolised the Christian journey through life from baptism to the grave.
The altar decoration and the ships were made by the sculptor Yan and depict Peter's fishing net, with all the boats heading towards the sun and life. The altar candlesticks were also made by Yan, who named them after the two bronze pillars in front of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem.
The chalice and paten, the paten and wafer box are by goldsmith Gunner Andresen, Viborg.
The decoration of Søndermarkskirken speaks of ‘The Sunrise from on High’:
The rays of the sun, made of stainless steel, spread across the wall and reach throughout the room. The masonry of the altar wall forms crosses upon crosses, and the rays of the sun reach the ceiling, floor and walls like crosses.
