The Ancient Road sculpture at Bække consists of a large stone bas-relief with two set stones. The relief depicts fragments of the way we imagine life unfold on the Ancient Road generations ago.

Explore the relief and see if you can find the drove bullocks on their way to Hamburg, or King Valdemar the Victorious on his way to Queen Dagmar in Ribe, or the pious pilgrim on his quest – travellers with very different purposes and of very different walks of life.

The Ancient Road sculpture at Bække is the creation of artist Niels Aage Schmidt from Varde and was established in 1992 on the initiative of the citizens of Bække. In the direction of Søndergade there is a bench with a granite gable carved with a map of the many trails of the Ancient Road. This gable was also created by the same artist.
